A Note From The Director:
In the Fall of 2019, the students of Ashford Homeschool Shakespeare Conquest and their director decided to produce A Midsummer Night’s Dream for their annual spring play. During rehearsals, the COVID pandemic caused the state to shutdown and the play was cancelled. During the summer, restrictions were lifted with certain requirements in place.
The decision was made to do a six-day outdoor summer camp culminating in one outdoor performance for the families of the students. A strict set of safety rules was implemented that included prop cleaning, social distancing among non-related students, bathroom rules, and masks at all all times.
The play will be 100% different than ever before. It will be goofier and probably some social distance jokes will be thrown in. It will be more difficult to understand the kids since they will be in masks, but this will be a great opportunity for them to work on their diction and their physical acting!
It will be more student guided as well. I will rely on the actors to get into their character while staying distanced. I will look to the actors for more ideas as well. It will be laid back and fun. I want the kids to look back at this pandemic as an opportunity for growth and not like something out of a post-apocalyptic movie. I want them to tell their grandchildren about performing Shakespeare in a mask while using hand sanitizer between each scene.
